Sojourn to the Past is a seven day trip to the Civil Rights Sites in the South. Eleven Youngstown high school students will leave March 31, 2018 traveling to Atlanta, Selma, Montgomery, and Birmingham. They will meet icons of the Movement, and will develop an action plan to implement when they return to Youngstown. The 2009 Sojourn students developed a Nonviolence Week for the city schools. In 2010 Sojourners petitioned the school board, the city council and the YSU trustees requesting each group to pass resolutions making Nonviolence Week an annual event in the schools, the city and the YSU campus, which they all did. On July 11, 2013, Sojourn students witnessed Governor Kasich sign their “Nonviolence Week in Ohio” bill into law. The Seventh Annual Nonviolence Parade and Rally was held on October 1, 2017. This is a life changing, leadership development experience where the students learn the principles of the Civil Rights Movement such as forgiveness, hope, compassion, justice, civic responsibility, nonviolence, not being a silent witness and standing up for what is right and just.
