Apology to John Lewis
On Saturday, March 2, 2013, Kevin Murphy, police chief of Montgomery Alabama, apologized to Congressman John Lewis for the lack of police protection when John Lewis and the freedom riders were beaten at the Montgomery bus station in 1965. He then gave Congressman Lewis his police badge and told him that now he was there to protect him.
I have spoken with Police Chief Kevin Murphy, and he has agreed to meet the Sojourn students at the Alabama capitol steps in Montgomery on Monday, April 2nd and be with us as we read Dr. King’s speech that he delivered there at the end of the Selma to Montgomery March in 1965. He will then speak to the students.
This is bringing history into the future.
