Sojourn to the Past is a ten day trip to the Civil Rights Sites in the South. Ten Youngstown high school students will leave March 28, 2013 traveling to Atlanta, Selma, Montgomery, Birmingham, Hattiesburg, Jackson, Little Rock and Memphis. They will meet many of the people who participated in the Movement. In Memphis they will develop an action plan to implement when they return to Youngstown. The 2009 Sojourn students developed a Nonviolence Week for the Youngstown city schools. The 2010 Sojourners petitioned the school board, the city council and the YSU trustees requesting each group to pass resolutions making Nonviolence Week an annual event in the schools, the city and the YSU campus. All three governing bodies did just that. The second Nonviolence Parade and Rally was held on October 7, 2012. This is a life changing, leadership development experience where the students learn the principles of the Civil Rights Movement such as forgiveness, hope, compassion, justice, civic responsibility, nonviolence, not being a silent witness and standing up for what is right and just.
